My DS1, who is very sharp but has dysgraphia, has been using IEW this year.

It doesn't look like too much busywork and it looks simple and to the point for kids. You can see their workbook samples online and video samples too. It teaches with DVD's as well and has student workbooks that teach grammar and the mechanics of writing. Also for upper elementary which is around $80 something, middle school, highschool, and college level too. There is also another writing curriculum out there called Essentials in Writing which is like $67 bucks for the lower elementary levels 1-3 (includes workbook & DVD set). So to conclude I would go with IEW (Institute for Excellence in Writing). So one is more teacher intensive (bravewriter) and IEW is a little less teacher intensive (depending on maturity/independence of child) because the student watches the lessons on dvd. But it is an investment in your kid(s) education. He also has a spelling and grammar program, although this adds up to expensive too. I like IEW because the students get taught the steps with DVD's and Mr. It wasn't scripted for the teacher, so the teacher reads the principle and directions, which I don't prefer. Brave Writer seems more bloggish to me than a curriculum and it was pricey for what you get it is pdf (except for the Writer's Jungle which is available in a Binder form). It didn't teach the kids the steps but guided them in what to do each lesson. They do copy work and narration similar to Writing With Ease, except they also add in what they call reverse recitation or French style recitation which is basically like dictation/copywork with some of the words blanked out and student needs to fill those blanks out. I like Bravewriter's lifestyle concept where they have poetry tea time, movies every week, games etc. So with Bravewriter it is more about creativity, with IEW it first gives them a model and a step by step structure so it gives them tools to practice over and over and they internalize the process so they can have confidence, WHILE at the same time teaches creativity with word use.
